Leaders & Stories of the Quarter

Each quarter, we celebrate the individuals who exemplify what it means to live our values—those who lead with integrity, collaborate with purpose, and put patients at the center of everything they do. These honorees are nominated by their peers, managers, and co-workers for going above and beyond, and selected by leadership for their exceptional contributions.

Their stories reflect the heart of our organization: grounded in respect, driven by stewardship, and strengthened through teamwork.

Mike Stites, Leader of the Quarter

Mike Stites exemplifies steady, principled leadership through his exceptional partnership with HR on a complex Department of Labor benefits audit. Since January 2025, he has dedicated countless hours to understanding plan documents, regulations, and claims processes so he could advocate for Union Health with accuracy, confidence, and integrity. Mike coordinated multiple stakeholders, managed tight deadlines, and maintained professionalism even when faced with barriers and delays. His thoughtful approach built trust with the DOL investigator and helped guide the process to a successful close — with no citations or penalties. Beyond resolving the issue, Mike’s leadership strengthened internal processes and improved the experience for coworkers and their families. He consistently models the qualities of an outstanding leader: one‑team mentality, clear communication, sound decision‑making, and unwavering accountability. It is a privilege to recognize Mike for his exceptional leadership and impact.

Sydney Caldwell, Story of the Quarter

Sydney Caldwell, RN transformed a challenging long‑stay patient situation through creativity and compassion. When the patient didn't feel up to a shower, Sydney designed a “Spa Day” experience complete with check‑in, service menu, and pampering treatments. The patient became engaged, showered, changed clothes, and left feeling valued and joyful — even calling it the best spa she’d ever visited. Sydney’s heart, ingenuity and commitment to patient dignity turned a difficult barrier into a meaningful breakthrough.

Jennifer Jaeger, Story of the Quarter

During a training session at IU Health Bedford Hospital — a facility with no obstetrical or neonatal services — Union Health clinicians Ryan Nevill and Jennifer Jaeger were called to assist with an unexpected emergency delivery of a 32‑week infant. With transfer impossible and staff unprepared, they provided calm, expert guidance through delivery, resuscitation, and stabilization. Their leadership helped ensure both mother and baby were safely transferred for further care. Ryan and Jennifer’s skill and dedication exemplify the lifesaving impact of Union Health’s commitment to rural readiness.
