One October evening around 6:30 p.m., a Union Health co-worker encountered a distressed patient in a wheelchair near the Professional Office Building awning. The patient had undergone lab work following multiple injections in her back and shoulder. Her daughter, who had brought her, had left and hadn’t returned after more than two hours. With no way to reach family or friends, and living on the southside of Terre Haute, the patient was stranded and anxious.
That’s when Carol stepped in.
Arriving promptly with a bus pass and a calm, kind demeanor, Carol listened attentively and helped coordinate care. Together, they escorted the patient to the bus stop and contacted Terre Haute transportation to ensure the driver was informed. When the patient chose not to take the bus, Carol didn’t stop there. She brought the patient back inside to wait near the pharmacy, checked in with her insurance, and explored alternative transportation options.
Ultimately, Carol reached out to a trusted driver she knew who transports patients and arranged a safe ride home. She stayed with the patient well past 9 p.m., all while managing her pager and other responsibilities.
Carol’s dedication, empathy, and unwavering support exemplify Union Health’s core values. Her ability to listen deeply and respond with grace made all the difference in a difficult moment. We are deeply grateful for her extraordinary care.
