Merger Finalized Between Union Health and Terre Haute Regional Hospital

It’s a historic day for the Wabash Valley! The Indiana Department of Health has officially issued the Certificate of Public Advantage and the anticipated merger between Union Hospital and Terre Haute Regional Hospital is now effective as of today, December 13, 2025.

Together with the State of Indiana—driven by its unwavering commitment to safeguard and strengthen the lives of those in Terre Haute, Vigo County and beyond—we forged a path that honors accountability, expands access and secures a brighter future for our community. This milestone was made possible through the extraordinary leadership and dedication of Indiana Governor Mike Braun and Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Lindsay Weaver, whose vision helped transform possibility into progress.

“I am deeply grateful to the remarkable team at Union Health and the many legislators and community leaders who supported this effort over the years,” said Steve Holman, President and CEO of Union Health. “Your passion and commitment are the driving force behind this transformation. Together, we are not just advancing health care; we are shaping a future where every patient feels the power of hope, healing and community. It is a privilege to stand alongside such dedicated individuals as we make our communities healthier, together.”

As we embark on this exciting chapter, the support of our community and co-workers will be essential. Together, through dedication and collaboration, we will turn this vision into reality.

We are now moving forward with the development of detailed implementation plans outlined in the COPA and creating a platform to share progress every step of the way. We look forward to sharing more information as our work continues.

Our commitment to providing you with exceptional care close to home is as strong as ever, and we’re grateful to move forward together with stability, reassurance and a shared vision for an even healthier future.

Union Health Enhancing Quality of Care by Bringing Together Select Health Care Services

In an effort to improve quality of care and access to key specialists, starting Saturday, December 13, 2025, Wound Care Services and Labor & Delivery Services will be consolidated at Union Hospital, located at 1606 N. 7th St., in Terre Haute. These two services will no longer be offered at the location formally known as Terre Haute Regional Hospital. Union Health is working with affected patients to transition their future appointments.

This announcement follows careful planning and coordination. The consolidation of these services was included in the 2025 Certificate of Public Advantage (COPA) application which the Indiana Department of Health approved.

Union Health remains committed to delivering comprehensive, patient-focused care across west central Indiana and eastern Illinois. We will continue to keep the community updated throughout our journey.

Union Health Recieves COPA Approval

For several years, Union Health and Terre Haute Regional Hospital have been on a journey to secure improved health care for the Wabash Valley through the creation of a combined health system.

Today, November 9, 2025, Union Health received notice that the Indiana Department of Health has approved the Certificate of Public Advantage (COPA) application that was submitted in February 2025.

Union Health is grateful that Indiana Governor Mike Braun, Indiana State Health Commissioner Lindsay Weaver and the Indiana Department of Health approved the COPA for Union Hospital and Terre Haute Regional Hospital to come together to improve health care for the Wabash Valley.

“This is an exciting moment for the two health systems, co-workers, patients and the community,” said Steve Holman, President and CEO of Union Health. “This merger provides more than just the combination of existing resources; it is an opportunity for growth, expanded services and improved health outcomes for those we serve.”

“For generations, both Union Health and Terre Haute Regional Hospital have been committed to caring for our community,” said Molly Callahan, Chair - Union Health Board of Directors. “Now, with COPA approval, we can not only combine those resources but expand the quality of health care we provide - all while allowing our patients to stay close to home.”

“We know this is this right decision and is in the best interest of our community, ensuring care close to home for generations to come,” Holman said.

Union Health will now focus on ensuring a seamless transition for patients and co-workers as we finalize the merger and integrate into a combined health system.

Healthier, together.
