Union Health Food Locker

At Union Health, we believe that no one should leave our care wondering where their next meal will come from. That’s why we’ve launched the Food Locker Program. This initiative is designed to provide emergency food bags to patients facing food insecurity at the time of discharge.

This program is part of our broader commitment to addressing the social determinants of health, especially the critical role of food as medicine in the Wabash Valley.

Why It Matters

Food insecurity is a serious challenge in our region. According to Feeding America’s 2023 data:

  • 18.3% of Vigo County residents experience food insecurity

  • That’s 2.2% higher than the Indiana state average

We see the impact of these numbers every day. Patients who lack access to nutritious food often face greater challenges in recovery and long-term health. As a healthcare provider, we are uniquely positioned to help.

“Food security is one of the most significant social determinants of health in our community.”Jack Hill, COO, Union Health System

How the Food Locker Works

Located outside of Union Hospital West, Building Two (8th Avenue Entrance), our new 16-door Food Locker system allows case managers to:

  • Identify patients experiencing food insecurity

  • Provide emergency food bags at discharge

  • Ensure patients and their families leave with immediate access to nutritious food

Making a Real Difference

The Food Locker Program is already changing lives. Recently, a patient who was readmitted was able to take home two food bags for their family.

We’re proud to be part of a solution that helps our patients recover, thrive, and live healthier lives.

Powered by Partnership

This program wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our partners:

  • Lugar Center for Rural Health

  • Anthem Foundation

  • Catholic Charities of Terre Haute

  • Union Health Foundation

  • Elevance Health Foundation
