The Emergency Departments at Union Hospital and Union Hospital Clinton provide immediate treatment and life-saving procedures in all types of emergency situations 24 hours a day, seven days per week to patients of all ages.

Union Hospital

The Union Hospital Emergency Department is the area’s busiest – providing life-saving treatment for injured and critically ill patients every day of the year. With over 55,000 patient visits annually, the emergency department at Union Hospital in Terre Haute is the busiest emergency department between Indianapolis and St. Louis.

Primary Stroke Certification

Union Hospital is nationally certified for treatment of stroke patients. National certification means that Union Hospital provides high quality care for stroke patients. Union Hospital treats about 400 to 600 patients a year for strokes. The hospital has a designated stroke team, with staff trained in all phases of care — from the time a patient enters the hospital to the time the patient leaves.

Chest Pain Accreditation with Primary PCI

Union Hospital has been recognized by The American College of Cardiology for its demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients with chest pain. Union Hospital was awarded Chest Pain Center Accreditation with Primary PCI based on rigorous onsite evaluation of the staff’s ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack.PCI  (percutaneous coronary intervention) is a non-surgical procedure that opens narrowed or blocked coronary arteries to reduce heart damage during or after a heart attack.

Union Hospital Clinton

The Union Hospital Clinton Emergency Department provides treatment for emergent patients from Vermillion, Parke, and south Fountain counties.

Accredited Chest Pain Center

Union Hospital Clinton has received full accreditation status as an Accredited Chest Pain Center from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. Union Hospital Clinton was the first hospital in the area to receive accreditation in 2007. In order to become an Accredited Chest Pain Center, UHC continues to re-evaluate and improve the processes in the care of its cardiac patients, working to integrate the best practices and newest approaches to care.

Some of the practices implemented as UHC continues to improve care of the cardiac patient in our community include collaborating with local emergency medical services to begin best care in the field; timely recognition and transfer of those cardiac patients requiring immediate intervention, and collaborating with the Heart & Vascular Institute at Union Hospital in Terre Haute for timely and appropriate follow-up care.
