Dr. Martin Schmidt has been a prominent figure in the Terre Haute area for many years. He graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology as a chemist in 1974, where he met his wife, Veronica, who was born and raised in Terre Haute. Together, they have raised nine children. Dr. Schmidt obtained his MD degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine and was part of the second incoming class at the IU Medical School extension in Terre Haute, associated with Indiana State University.
Following his education, he served in the Army for nine years, completing a three-year Internal Medicine residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, and a two-year Gastroenterology fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He returned to Terre Haute in 1988 after his military service and has been practicing as a Gastroenterologist in the community ever since.
Dr. Schmidt has also been actively involved in teaching medical students, family practice residents, and mid-level providers. He considers it an honor to educate students and, with the support of Union Hospital, to provide the highest quality gastrointestinal care to the people of the Wabash Valley.
